How to be an Expert on Day 1

Created by Smarter by 1 Degree, Modified on Mon, 23 Mar at 2:38 AM by Smarter by 1 Degree

At Smarter by 1 Degree, we believe that being successful isn’t about knowing everything on day one, it’s about knowing where to start and how to keep moving forward.

This guide will help

1. Know Your Tools

Familiarity builds confidence. Spend a few minutes exploring your SB1D tools so you can navigate them with ease.

Here’s where to begin:

  • SB1D Portal – Your main hub for courses and support.

  • Canvas – Where you’ll find lessons, assignments, and quizzes.

  • Ampeducator – Where you’ll access college exams and view official grades

Tip: Log in to each platform on your first day. Click around, explore, and see how everything connects.

2. Explore Your Degree Plan

Your Degree Plan is your built-in guide to success. It shows you every course you’ll take and in what order, so you never have to guess what comes next.

✔ Bookmark your degree plan in your browser.

✔ Locate QRG’s and use them for quick help
✔ Use it to track your credits and stay organized.

The more familiar you are with your degree plan, the more confident you’ll feel navigating your program.

3. Master Your Daily Routine

Small habits lead to big results. SB1D students succeed by staying consistent not by working endlessly.

Here’s the winning formula:

  • 3 Hours a Day: Stay focused during your dedicated learning time.

  • Focus: Give each class your full attention.

  • Plan for 10 Courses per Year: Stay on track with your Degree Plan goals.

Tip: Treat your learning time like an appointment, show up for it, and protect it like it matters (because it does).

 4. Learn in Short, Focused Bursts

Every expert started as a beginner. What sets SB1D students apart is their mindset, they’re willing to ask questions, make mistakes, and keep learning. Our courses are designed using micro-learning concise video lessons followed by a quiz. This helps you:

  • Focus on one concept at a time.  Don’t rush through lessons. Take time to understand.

  • Learn, process, and apply the information for long term retention

  • Avoid burnout or information overload

Pro Tip: Set a goal to complete 2–3 lessons per study session. Short, consistent study times are better than cramming!

5. Focus on Mastery — Not Perfection

SB1D uses a mastery-based learning model, which means you can review and rewatch lessons until you truly understand them.

Don’t rush through, take your time to:
✔ Revisit quizzes where you scored lower
✔ Review your End-of-Course (EOC) notes
✔ Celebrate progress, not just completion

When you focus on understanding, you’ll naturally improve your scores and confidence.

6. Use the End-of-Course (EOC) Review

Before each exam, review your EOC document. It's your built-in study guide. It includes key terms, lesson summaries, and topics that will appear on the final exam.

Tip:  Create handwritten flashcards or summary notes from your EOC to help you prepare. You can use your handwritten notes during your final exam!

7. Stay Organized and Accountable

Being an expert isn’t just about what you know,  it’s about how you manage your time.

A few simple habits can make a big difference:

  • Keep a planner or use our lesson checklist for your courses.

  • Set reminders for study times or goals.

  • Review your Degree Plan each week to stay aligned.

Tip: End each study session by writing down where to pick up next time. It makes restarting the next day effortless.

8. Set a Weekly Routine

Because SB1D is self-paced, it’s up to you to set your schedule. A consistent routine helps you make steady progress without feeling overwhelmed. Sb1D students work just 3 hours a day for school.

Example Study Plan:

  • Mon–Wed: Complete 2–3 lessons per day

  • Thu: Review EOC notes or retake low quiz scores

  • Fri: Reflect on what you’ve learned

  • Weekend: Optional catch-up or start next course

Setting a routine and being consistent makes a big difference and sets you up for success for your future.

9. Think Like a College Student

You’re already earning real college credit, so start thinking and working like a college student.

That means taking initiative, managing your time, and taking ownership of your progress. The more proactive you are, the more confident and capable you’ll feel.

10. Ask for Help Early

You’re never alone at SB1D!  If something doesn’t make sense or you’re stuck, don’t wait to reach out.

Our team can help with:

  • Course navigation

  • Degree planning

  • Testing or tech issues

  • Motivation and accountability

Reach out through the help portal on your degree plan! We respond quickly and love helping you succeed.

11. Practice Academic Integrity

Every exam is proctored for college credit, which means your honesty matters. Take your tests independently, in a quiet space, and use only allowed materials.

Remember:

  • No phones, messaging apps, or outside help

  • Only handwritten or typed notes are allowed

  • Keep your camera and microphone on during exams

Your integrity ensures your hard work is recognized by the university  and keeps your credits valid.

12. Adopt a Growth Mindset

You don’t have to know everything right away, that's what learning is for! Approach each lesson with curiosity instead of pressure.

✔ Mistakes are part of the process.
 ✔ Growth takes practice.
✔ Every quiz, every retry, and every exam makes you smarter by one degree.

13. Celebrate Your Progress

Each course, quiz, and exam completed is a real college achievement! Track your wins, share them in the SB1D community, and be proud of how far you’ve come.

Remember,  you’re not just earning credits. You’re building skills, discipline, and confidence that will last long after graduation.

Final Thought

Becoming an expert from day one isn’t about being perfect,  it’s about being prepared, curious, and consistent.  When you combine SB1D’s flexible structure with your own motivation, you’ll not only earn college credit, you’ll learn how to learn like an expert.
